For various reasons, to fit into cap regulations or the league's roster limitation. NHL teams often have to place players through waivers to send them to their AHL affiliate.

TWO FORWARDS PLACED ON WAIVERS
Today, the Red Wings and the Bruins have announced that they've respectively sent Matt Luff and Oskar Steen down the waiver wire for assignment to their AHL affiliate:
Placed on NHL waivers today: Oskar Steen (BOS) and Matt Luff (DET).
Steen, 25, has only managed 1 goal through the 34 NHL games he's participated in. However, during his time with the Providence Bruins, he collected 5 in 5. Luff,, on the end, 26, is not known for his physicality but for hisoffensive-mindedd play. He hasn't been able to bring at the game's highest level; he hasn't yet participated in a game in 2023-2024 but he collected 4 points through 19 outings in 2022-2023.
