A two-time Stanley Cup champion and a former first round pick were both placed on the National Hockey League's waiver wire on Sunday morning.
On Sunday, two teams looked to clear some cap space ahead of free agency and did so by placing a pair of players on the NHL's waiver wire, one for the purpose of a buyout, the other for a mutual contract termination.
Former Stanley Cup champion, former first round pick both land on waivers
In a post on social media, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Tampa Bay Lightning have placed forward
Conor Sheary on waivers for the purpose of a contract termination.
Friedman added that it was mutually agreed upon by both parties, with
Conor Sheary wanting an opportunity to play in the National Hockey League next season.
"Conor Sheary (TB) on waivers to terminate contract.
Sheary had one more year at a $2M AAV, but couldn't get one roster due to TB cap problems.
He asked to terminate to get a chance to be in NHL" Friedman said.
In 59 games this season with the American Hockey League's
Syracuse Crunch, Sheary registered 61 points (20 goals, 41 assists), 23 penalty minutes and was a plus-15.
Also on the NHL's waiver wire on Sunday, albeit for a contract buyout, is former first round pick
Joseph Veleno, who was recently acquire
recently acquired by the Seattle Kraken from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for
Andre Burakovsky.
According to PuckPedia, because Veleno is under the age of 26, the buyout is only 1/3, with Seattle's cap hit for the Montreal native being $796,000 for the 2025-26 campaign and $296,000 for the 2026-27 season.
"The #SeaKraken buy out the final 1 year $2.275M Cap Hit of Veleno's contract. As he's under 26, the buyout is 1/3. Buyout Cap Hit:
Year 1 $796K ($1.5M savings)
Year 2 $296K" PuckPedia said.
In 74 games between the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks last season, Veleno put up 17 points (eight goals, nine assists), 17 penalty minutes and was a minus-23.
Conor Sheary and Joe Veleno would be intriguing depth options for the Vancouver Canucks to consider on July 1st and both players would likely come cheap too, around $1 million AAV on a one year deal.
It'll be interesting to see if the Canucks consider either player on Canada Day and if they're able to bring one of them to Vancouver for the 2025-26 season.
