Stanley Cup winner and 30-goal scorer on the block: Trade target for Allvin?
As Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks search for help on the wing this summer, an interesting trade option has just been made available by the St. Louis Blues.
According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, the St. Louis Blues have made former Stanley Cup champion Brandon Saad available for trade this summer. The Blues are looking to improve their roster in any way possible after missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs in back-to-back years for the first time since 2009-10 and 2010-11.
"There are rumblings that Saad is available as GM Doug Armstrong checks market prices as part of his due diligence in a quest to make the Blues better. It's a bit surprising considering Saad is coming off the second-best goal scoring season of his career, netting 26 last year to finish tied for fourth on the team with Robert Thomas." Seravalli said.
He added, "However, if you think about it from Armstrong's perspective, this might be the exact time to cash in on Saad with strong value on the market considering the two years remaining on his deal. It's also the same old, same old in St. Louis: Saad has a full no-trade' clause for one more year, and he also happens to have the same agent as Krug, who blocked a trade last summer with that very clause." The Pittsburgh native could be an interesting option for Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks this summer and given his production in the 2023-24 campaign, he could still be a valuable piece in a second or third line role, as well as on the second powerplay unit.
Saad has two years remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $4.5 million and while it's not clear what the Blues want for him, the Canucks could offer Ilya Mikheyev in return, who has a similar salary - $4.75 million for the next two seasons. Saad could be a cheaper option, both in terms of salary and what it may cost to acquire him, than it would be for Allvin to go out onto the free agent market on July 1st and bring in a middle-six forward with scoring punch.
The 31-year-old appeared in all 82 games this past season for the St. Louis Blues where he put up 42 points (26 goals, 16 assists), 20 penalty minutes and was a minus-four.
