A former Vancouver Canucks goaltender has signed a new multi-year contract in the NHL a little over 24 hours before he was set to become an unrestricted free agent.

We're officially one day away from the start of the National Hockey League's free agency period and it's going to be quite busy on Tuesday, however some players have decided to put pen-to-paper on new deals ahead of time.
After a three-year absence from the National Hockey League, former Vancouver forward Juho Lammikko signed with the New Jersey Devils and on Monday morning, another ex-Canuck inked a new contract that'll keep him in the Eastern Conference.

Early on Monday, Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie & Dhali reported that former Vancouver Canucks goaltender Michael DiPietro was closing in on a new contract to remain with the Boston Bruins, adding that he would've had a lot of interest if he made it to the open market tomorrow.
"Sounds like the Bruins are closing in on a deal with goalie Michael DiPietro who would have had a lot of interest on July 1st." Dhaliwal said.
Shortly after, Michael DiPietro's new contract was confirmed by Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, who announced that the netminder has signed a two-year contract with the Boston Bruins with an average annual value (AAV) of $812,000 US.
"Another intriguing goalie with upside off the board: #NHLBruins re-sign pending Group VI UFA Michael DiPietro to keep him in the fold.

Deal is 2 years x $812,500.

DiPietro stays. Hofer re-signed. Tarasov traded. That leaves Cayden Primeau among younger/RFA options." Seravalli said.
DiPietro, 26, is coming off his best season in professional hockey so far, appearing in 40 games for the AHL's Providence Bruins where he had a 26-8-3 record along with a 2.05 goals against average, a .927 save percentage and four shutouts.
His strong play throughout the 2024-25 season earned him the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award as the best goaltender in the American Hockey League.
Returning to the Boston Bruins organization seems like a bit of an odd decision, especially if, as Rick Dhaliwal mentions, that he'd have a ton of interest on July 1st, which could've landed him more money and potentially an NHL backup role for the 2025-26 season.
In Boston, DiPietro has no path to the National Hockey League roster as the Bruins have Jeremy Swayman and Joonas Korpisalo and unless one gets hurt, it looks like it'll be another full year in the AHL for the former Vancouver Canucks netminder.
