An insider has given a massive update regarding Thatcher Demko's future with the Vancouver Canucks organization as he becomes eligible for an extension on July 1st.

While unrestricted free agents get all the headlines on Canada Day, for good reason, there's a number of players across the National Hockey League that will have that date circled on their calendar as they become eligible for a contract extension.
For the Vancouver Canucks, the most notable name on their roster that's eligible for a contract extension starting on July 1st is goaltender Thatcher Demko, who has reportedly made progress on a new deal this past week, but isn't at the finish line just yet.
"Darren Dreger: It does sound like progress has been made on a multi-year extension for Thatcher Demko with the Canucks; extension far more likely than trade at this point - TSN 1050" NHL Rumour Report said on X on Wednesday.

Insider gives massive update on Thatcher Demko's future with the Vancouver Canucks

While making an appearance on the NHL Network on Saturday afternoon, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported that if Patrik Allvin is unable to sign Demko to a contract extension, then look for the Vancouver Canucks to trade the netminder as early as this week.
"If they can't get Demko locked into a contract extension, they will look to move him over the next week." Pagnotta said.
The notion of trading Thatcher Demko would've seemed impossible just 12 months ago when he was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, however with Arturs Silovs ready for a full-time NHL role and Kevin Lankinen locked up to a five-year extension, it's made the San Diego, California native expendable.
It also appears that Thatcher Demko isn't against a possible trade either, as David Pagnotta reported in late May that the 29-year-old is open to a change of scenery this summer.
"Goalie Thatcher Demko appears open to a change of scenery and is expected to be in play as he enters the final year of his contract." Pagnotta said.

He added, ""Demko, who has a $5 million cap hit and does not own any no-trade protection, has had health concerns, but he is excited to have a normal summer.

I'm told he is not battling any issues and is already training for next season, and with the Canucks committed to Kevin Lankinen, teams evaluating their goaltending position will be an option for Vancouver."

We'll have to wait and see where things go in the days ahead, but it looks like it's shaping up to be a big week for Thatcher Demko and his future with the Vancouver Canucks.
