Former Vancouver Canucks radio voice Jon Abbott lands big role with Sportsnet
Former Vancouver Canucks radio voice Jon Abbott has landed a big role with Sportsnet.
Jon Abbott, who was the last play-by-play voice of the Vancouver Canucks on TSN 1040 radio, has been hired as Rick Ball's replacement for Calgary Flames broadcasts on Sportsnet starting this season.
The Calgary Flames confirmed the news in a press release posted to their team website on Monday afternoon.
"Sportsnet today announced that Jon Abbott has been named as the new play-by-play voice of the Calgary Flames on Sportsnet. Abbott joins game analysts Kelly Hrudey and Greg Millen in the Sportsnet broadcast booth, with host Ryan Leslie delivering the latest updates around the rink." The Flames said.
This isn't the first time that Abbott has been brought in as a replacement for Rick Ball, who's now off to Chicago to work on the Blackhawks' broadcasts. Ball used to call BC Lions games on TSN 1040, while also doing some Canucks games. When Ball moved on to Sportsnet and the Calgary Flames, Abbott was brought in to replace him on TSN radio.
"The hockey world is a small one and often provides full circle moments. Growing up in Aylmer, ON, my minor hockey team was named the Flames because of funding provided by a former owner of the Calgary Flames, the late Harley Hotchkiss. Mr. Hotchkiss was from the neighbouring community of Tillsonburg, and just as the Flames ownership continues to do today, he always supported his community through his love for the game. It is an honour to join both the Sportsnet and Flames families over 30 years later, and I look forward to many years of great hockey memories in Calgary." Abbott said.
Jon Abbott's first game in the booth for the Calgary Flames will likely be on opening night, October 9th, against the team he used to call games for, the Vancouver Canucks.
