Former Vancouver Canucks forward nominated for NHL award
The nominees for the majority of the National Hockey League's awards this season have already been announced, with the only one that wasn't as of yesterday being the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award.
This morning, the National Hockey League announced the nominees for the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award and among the three GMs was former Vancouver Canucks forward Jim Nill, who has been with the Dallas Stars for 12 seasons now.
Along with Jim Nill, Kevin Cheveldayoff of the Winnipeg Jets and Bill Zito of the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers are also up for this year's award.
"Kevin Cheveldayoff (@NHLJets), Jim Nill (@DallasStars) and Bill Zito (@FlaPanthers) are the three finalists for the 2024-25 Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award." NHL Public Relations said on X.
Nill, 67, has done some incredible work with the Dallas Stars in recent years, which is why he's taken home the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award in back-to-back seasons and is looking for a three-peat.
This season, Nill has helped the Dallas Stars reach their third consecutive Western Conference Final and has made some pretty significant moves since last summer, none bigger than
landing Mikko Rantanen from the Carolina Hurricanes and signing him to an eight-year extension, which has worked out well so far as the Finnish forward leads the Stanley Cup Playoffs in goals (9) and points (20).
Along with adding
Mikko Rantanen, Nill also made a deal with the San Jose Sharks which saw him land another Finnish forward -
Mikael Granlund, who has been lights out in the playoffs for Dallas, as well as defenseman
Cody Ceci.
"Nill's Stars (50-26-6, 106 points) finished fifth in the NHL's overall standings during the regular season, marking the first time the franchise posted a top-five finish in consecutive seasons since the Presidents' Trophy-winning teams in 1997-98 and 1998-99.
The club has advanced to the Conference Finals for the third consecutive season and fourth time in six years. Nill strengthened a perennially strong roster by adding C Mikael Granlund and D Cody Ceci from San Jose in early February and made headlines at the March 7 trade deadline with the acquisition of RW Mikko Rantanen from Carolina.
Rantanen leads all playoff scorers with 9-11--20 in 14 GP, including a historic third-period hat trick vs. Colorado in Game 7 of the First Round." the NHL's media release said.
During his playing career, Nill spent parts of three seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, helping them reach the Stanley Cup Final in 1982, putting up seven points and 67 penalty minutes in 16 games during that run.
With the work Jim Nill has done this season with the Dallas Stars, it wouldn't shock anyone in the hockey world if he wins the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award for a third straight year.
