Hockey World Mourns the Passing of Former NHL First Round Pick at the Age of 58
The hockey world is mourning the passing of a former National Hockey League first round pick, who played for Edmonton and Buffalo, at the age of 58.
Recently, the hockey world lost another member and someone who made a name for himself in the American Hockey League, leading the Rochester Americans to a Calder Cup title in 1994, nine years after being selected in the first round of the NHL Draft.
Former Edmonton Oilers first round pick, Calder Cup champion passes away
In a post on social media on Friday, the National Hockey League's Alumni Association announced that former Edmonton Oilers first round pick Scott Metcalfe has passed away at the age of 58.
"The NHL Alumni Association is deeply saddened to learn Scott Metcalfe has passed away at the age of 58.
We send our heartfelt condolences to Scott's family, friends, and former teammates during this incredibly difficult time." part of the Alumni Association's statement said.
Metcalfe's professional career began in 1987 when he joined the Edmonton Oilers' American Hockey League affiliate in Nova Scotia, while also making two appearances at the NHL level with the club that season.
During his first professional season, the Edmonton Oilers traded Metcalfe to the Buffalo Sabres and he'd go on to spent parts of the next four seasons with their organization before leaving North America in 1991.
Between 1991 and 1993, Metcalfe appeared in the first and second divisions in Germany with four different clubs, most notably the Berlin Polar Bears during the 1992-93 campaign.
Metcalfe then returned to North America, joining the ECHL's Knoxville Cherokees, along with one of his former clubs, the American Hockey League's Rochester Americans, the team that the Toronto native would have some of the best years of his career with and as mentioned, helped them win a Calder Cup during the 1995-96 season.
"It's a terribly sad day for the organization. Scott had this larger-than-life personality about him, and it resonated with Amerks fans all over Rochester. It's easy to see why he was such a fan favorite. He wore the red, white and blue proudly every night, was the ultimate competitor and a consummate professional who always put his teammates and the organization first. He did so much for the community, even well after his retirement, and to this day called Rochester his home. He was absolutely beloved in the locker room and will be truly missed. My heart goes out to his wife, Jane, and their children, Tanner, Quinn and Keegan, and all that knew him within the local hockey community during this unimaginably difficult time." Metcalfe's former teammate Jody Gage said in the Rochester Americans' press release.
After the 1997-98 season, Metcalfe headed to Europe for a second time, returning to Germany for two years with the Hannover Scorpions and one year with the Sheffield Steelers in England.
The 2001-02 season would end up being Metcalfe's last of his professional hockey career, skating in three games with the Adirondack IceHawks of the now-defunct United Hockey League before retiring.
