Former Canuck Alex Burrows no longer an assistant coach with Montreal
As the free agent frenzy gets underway, some news has dropped on the coaching front involving a former Vancouver Canucks forward.
According to Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports in Quebec, former Vancouver Canucks forward Alexandre Burrows will no longer be an assistant coach with the Montreal Canadiens because he wants to spend more time with his family.
"Alex Burrows won't be back with the @CanadiensMTL coaching staff next season. It's his decision, not the team decision. He wanted to spend more time with his family. He'll normally stay in the organization in another position." Lavoie said.
One day after Lavoie's report, the Canadiens made it official. Alexandre Burrows has decided to step away from his coaching role on the team and has been hired by the Canadiens in the Player Development department.
"Montreal Canadiens executive vice president, hockey operations Jeff Gorton announced on Tuesday that the team has hired Lauri Korpikoski as a player development coach. He will be based in Europe. Gorton also announced that Alex Burrows will now take on the role of player development consultant."
Burrows, 43, joined the Canadiens organization in 2019 as a coach for their AHL team in Laval before being promoted to the big club in Montreal as an assistant coach in early 2021, helping them reach the Stanley Cup Final that same year.
The Pincourt, Quebec native spent parts of 12 seasons with the Vancouver Canucks before joining the Ottawa Senators for the final season and a half of his career and hung up his skates in July 2018.
