Ahead of Friday's trade deadline, an American Hockey League General Manager has made the difficult decision to trade his own son.
It's been relatively quiet ahead of this year's deadline in the AHL, but one General Manager has made some noise by trading his own son this week.
Utica Comets GM Dan MacKinnon trades his son Will
On Thursday, the Utica Comets (New Jersey's affiliate) announced that they've traded defenseman Will MacKinnon to the Cleveland Monsters (Columbus' affiliate) in exchange for future considerations.
"NEWS: Will MacKinnon has been traded to the Cleveland Monsters for Future Considerations.
Thanks for everything, Mack!" the Comets said.
The trade drew plenty of attention in the hockey world as Utica's General Manager, Dan MacKinnon, is the father of Will, who spent parts of two seasons with the Comets before Thursday's move.
"The GM of the Utica Comets, Dan MacKinnon, traded his son Will MacKinnon for Future Considerations
Trading your son for Future Considerations is DIABOLICAL 😭" BR Open Ice said.
MacKinnon, 24, spent four years at the University of New Hampshire before turning pro following at the conclusion of his final season, signing an ECHL contract with the Reading Royals in 2022.
In 42 games this season for Utica, the Plymouth, Michigan native had four assists, 42 penalty minutes and was a plus-three.
It likely wasn't an easy decision to trade his son, but Dan MacKinnon has been in hockey for a long time, and is a Stanley Cup champion, so he knows that it's just a business and nothing personal, although it should make for an interest conversation the next time their family gathers for a holiday.
