An Abbotsford Canucks Calder Cup champion was claimed off waivers on Monday as clubs around the NHL continue to prepare their rosters for opening night.

Sunday marked the final day for teams around the National Hockey League to utilize waivers before opening night rosters needed to be submitted and understandably, it was very busy as a total of 43 players landed on the wire.
Three former members of the Vancouver Canucks organization found themselves waived yesterday - Jack Studnicka (Florida Panthers), Michael DiPietro (Boston Bruins), as well as Sammy Blais (Montreal Canadiens) and on Monday, the latter found himself a new home for the start of the 2025-26 campaign.

Abbotsford Canucks Calder Cup champion claimed off waivers on Monday

In a post on social media earlier on Monday, the Toronto Mpale Leafs announced that they've claimed forward Sammy Blais off waivers from their rivals, the Montreal Canadiens.
"The Maple Leafs have claimed F Sammy Blais off waivers from Montreal and G Cayden Primeau off waivers from Carolina." Toronto's public relations account said on X.
Blais, 29, joined the Vancouver Canucks organization in the summer of 2024, signing an AHL contract with Abbotsford, and was also invited to training camp in Vancouver on a professional tryout (PTO).
The former Stanley Cup champion had a strong year in the American Hockey League, putting up 40 points (14 goals, 26 assists) in 51 regular season contests, as well as 19 points (six goals, 13 assists) in 23 games during the playoffs, helping Abbotsford win their first-ever Calder Cup in team history.
In an attempt to play in the National Hockey League again, Blais decided not to return to Abbotsford for a second season and instead signed in his home province of Quebec with the Montreal Canadiens.
After spending training camp with the Canadiens and suiting up in a few preseason games, the Montmagny, Quebec native will find himself on the other side of the Original Six rivalry as the two teams open up the 2025-26 season against each other on Wednesday in Toronto.
