Despite rumours that he was attempting to return to North America and sign in the National Hockey League, former Vancouver Canucks forward Nikolay Goldobin decided to remain in Russia. This is off to a hot start to the new season.
The 2023-24 KHL campaign began a few weeks ago, with Goldobin suiting up for his new club, Spartak Moscow. Since the season started, Goldobin has been on a tear that no one could have expected.
On Friday, the 27-year-old put up FIVE assists in a 6-3 win over Barys Astana, which had him in the KHL scoring lead with 14 points (eight goals, six assists) in nine games. Then today, Goldobin picked up an assist in Spartak Moscow's 3-2 overtime win against Traktor Chelyabinsk to improve to 15 points in ten games.
No doubt, staying in the KHL this season has benefited Goldobin immensely. In contrast, if he had come to North America, he might not have gotten the same minutes or opportunities he's getting with Spartak Moscow.
