With the offseason winding down, The Athletic has decided to share their grades for how each team did this summer and on Friday, they featured the Vancouver Canucks.
Thomas Drance and Harman Dayal broke the offseason down into several categories: Cap Management, 2023 NHL Entry Draft, UFA Work, RFA Work and Final/Overall Grade.
First up, Cap Management. Drance and Dayal gave the Canucks a B. The buyout of Oliver Ekman-Larsson, which was needed, awarded them a C+. As for signing players such as Phillip Di Giuseppe, Christian Wolanin and Guillaume Brisebois to two-way deals for depth earned them an A-. Final subcategory under cap management was keeping UFA deals short, which the Canucks were given a B+ following the signing of Carson Soucy, Ian Cole, Teddy Blueger, Pius Suter, among others.
When it comes to the NHL Entry Draft, the Canucks were given a B. During the draft, they selected several talented players, highlighted by right-shot defenceman Tom Willander, who they got with their 11th overall pick.
For their work in the unrestricted free agent market as a whole, the Canucks received a B+. They also graded Allvin's individual signings: Ian Cole (B+), Carson Soucy (B-), Teddy Blueger (B+), Pius Suter (A), re-signing Noah Juulsen (A).
As for their RFA work, Drance and Dayal gave the organization a D-, mainly due to the fact they didn't get Elias Pettersson signed to an extension. But they did give the Nils Hoglander bridge contract a C+.
For their entire summer as a whole, the Canucks received a C+. Drance and Dayal said that the team had a solid offseason and made some very smart moves and signings, but not getting Pettersson inked to an extension dropped the grade down.
