Big Changes Coming to Contracts For Several Vancouver Canucks Players This Summer

Some big changes are on the horizon regarding the contracts for several members of the Vancouver Canucks organization starting on Tuesday, July 1st.
The Vancouver Canucks are focused on
improving their roster this summer, with some holes needing to be filled on the forward group and they could opt to address those needs through free agency starting on Canada Day.
Every year, July 1st also brings added importance for teams and players around the National Hockey League, whether that be the start of someone's contract extension or a specific clause coming into effect, such as an NMC, NTC or modified-NTC.
Contract clauses begin for five Vancouver Canucks players on July 1st
With the start of July less than three weeks away, five members of the Vancouver Canucks will gain trade protection, according to
Canucks Army, including forward
Elias Pettersson, who the team
is reportedly taking calls on this month.
Starting on Canada Day, Elias Pettersson will see his full-no movement clause go into effect, which will run through the 2032-33 season, when the Swedish forward is 34-years-old.
On the blue line,
Marcus Pettersson and
Filip Hronek will have full no-movement clauses for the next three seasons before both turn into 15-team no-trade clauses until 2031 and 2032, respectively.
Finally, between the pipes, the Vancouver Canucks really liked what they saw from
Kevin Lankinen between October and February and decided to give him
a five-year extension, which includes a full no-movement clause for the first two seasons, before transitioning into a 15-team no-trade clause for the final three years of the deal.
"Five Vancouver Canuck players will have their trade protection change starting in 2025.
Elias Pettersson: Full NMC (2025-2032)
Filip Hronek: Full NMC (2025-2028), 15 Team NTC (2028-2032)
Marcus Pettersson: Full NMC (2025-2028), 15 Team NTC (2028-2031)
Kevin Lankinen: Full NMC (2025-2027), 15 Team NTC (2027-2030)
Drew O'Connor: 12 Team NTC (2025-2027)" Canucks Army said on X.
In one way or another, trade protection sometimes comes back to bite teams in the behind down the road, usually due to performance-related issues, and it'll be interesting to see if that's the case with the Vancouver Canucks, primarily with the three players who have the longest clauses - Elias Pettersson, Marcus Pettersson and Filip Hronek.
