Canucks prospect officially leaves the organization: Heading overseas
Former Abbotsford defenceman Nick Cecik has found a new home after leaving the Canucks organization as a free agent earlier this month.
After hitting the free agent market in Canada, it was unclear what the future held for Nick Cecik, who spent time with the American Hockey League's Abbotsford Canucks last season. Just over two weeks after becoming a free agent, Nick Cecik has signed a contract for the 2024-25 season.
In a post on their website on Thursday, Adler Mannheim of the DEL, Germany's highest division of professional hockey, announced that they've agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Nick Cecik for the 2024-25 campaign.
"I am looking forward to Mannheim and this new chapter in my life. I have heard a lot about the club and its fans and can't wait to be a part of it. I am ready to help the team," Cecik said.
Adler Mannheim's head coach, Dallas Eakins, who spent time in North America behind the bench for Edmonton and Anaheim, commented on the signing, saying that he's happy to have Nick Cecik joining the team and that his leadership qualities will be beneficial.
"Nick has exactly the attributes we want to embody, both as a player and a person. Continuous improvement is important to him. He has leadership qualities, is courageous and can build the game. We are delighted that Nick has joined our organization," Eakins said.
Cecik, 24, joined the Vancouver Canucks organization in December 2023 after being traded to them, along with a sixth-round pick, in exchange for Jack Studnicka. The Winnipeg native never suited up in an NHL game for Vancouver but appeared in 49 games in the AHL for Abbotsford, where he registered 14 points (three goals, 11 assists), 52 penalty minutes and was a plus-five.
