Even with the lack of moves made by the Vancouver Canucks this offseason, they still have a ton of prospects and young skaters that are impressing early in camp, and NHL reporter Craig Button is saying some pretty questionable things about one of their mist promising stars.
"Mittelstadt has shown some offensive upside, he finished last season with 40 points and 15 goals, and could do better on a much more rounded out team like the Canucks."
Craig Button focuses on the negative sides of Vancouver Canucks top prospect Braeden Cootes after impressing the organization
Early in the offseason, 2025 1st-round draft pick Braeden Cootes is certainly standing out for the Canucks, registering a primary assist on Victor Mancini's goal, had one shot and finished the game with a very impressive 57.1 faceoff percentage in 14:56 TOI.
He added, "So there's a lot to like there. He plays a pretty smart, composed, all the cliques you would have for a guy that goes out there and doesn't make any loud mistakes despite being as young as he is. I still think it's a long road and probably a far cry for him to actually be in the NHL, but I could see them giving him that nine-game audition."
With all that he does well, he is very likely to start the year in the NHL with a 9 game leash, but while fans and the organization is excited about what the young kid has to offer, NHL reporter Craig Button is proving why he is not a fan favorite of the Canucks fan base.
He highlighted some of the things that Cootes does well, but decided that he would add a negative jab that certainly insinuates he does not think he is ready for a role with the Canucks.
"You're looking at a player that has the hockey sense, the skill, and the competitive will to be a really good NHL player. What he doesn't have is the
physical maturity.." - Craig Button on the hype around Braeden Cootes
Button has a way of really making comments that serve no purpose other than to deflate the tires and hype of anything exciting, especially when the season went so poor last year.
Cootes has what it takes to be a bonified star in the league, and many players like
Jack Hughes,
Elias Pettersson were all undersized players who donating in their early seasons, which should be no different in this case.
