It feels like the Vancouver Canucks and J.T. Miller will never really be able to separate from each other, as a respected voice in hockey media has suggested that Elias Pettersson needs to take a page out of Miller's playbook if he wants to reach his full potential in his "revenge season".
Since J.T. Miller was traded to the New York Rangers in the middle of last season due to a highly publicized and distracting feud with teammate Elias Pettersson, the goal of shipping him off was to put all of the drama behind them, but it appears the fan base and media are not ready to let it go.
They were never quite pulling in the same direction. Tocchet wanted discipline. Miller brought passion-sometimes a little too much of it. Defensive lapses, sideline blow-ups, heated exchanges with teammates it all started to feel like his style was clashing with Tocchet's message. You could see it on the bench during games. Vancouver Canucks Star Center Elias Pettersson needs to look up to J.T. Miller for once in order to have a bounce back season in 2025-26
Cleary a polarizing figure on the Canucks, it is no question that in Miller's tenure with the organization, he proved to be the voice of passion and heartbeat of the team, regardless if it came off in toxic way at times.
«Sometimes it takes players a little while to find some of that fire in them. [Pettersson] is never going to be a J.T. Miller-like player with that intensity,» Cam Robinson said on the Sekeres and Price podcast. «But I do think that he can grow into it a little bit more and find that switch a little more often.» - Cam Robinson
With Pettersson already stating he has put on muscle this summer and is looking for revenge this season, the suggestion to get meaner and more intense like Miller would actually put a lot of the criticism of his soft play to rest, let alone make him step up as a true leader of the team.
