On Thursday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman shared that both Nikita Zadorov's camp and the Vancouver Canucks weren't willing to budge in contract negotiations and the Russian defenceman was likely going to hit unrestricted free agency on July 1st.
Now, flash forward 24 hours and there may be a slight glimmer of hope for Canucks fans and the potential of Nikita Zadorov being back in Vancouver for the 2024-25 season.
During Friday's edition of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman provided an update on Zadorov's situation in Vancouver after speaking with another source. Friedman says that we're going to know in the next few days if Zadorov and the Canucks are able to compromise and come to an agreement.
Friedman added that this isn't over yet, however it might be soon and the odds of Nikita Zadorov signing a new contract with the Vancouver Canucks is less than 50 percent.
Zadorov, a native of Moscow, was strong on the back end for the Vancouver Canucks since his trade from the Calgary Flames back in November. The 29-year-old appeared in 54 regular season games where had 14 points (five goals, nine assists), 102 penalty minutes and was a plus-six. He went on to add eight points (four goals, four assists) in 13 Stanley Cup Playoff contests.
It's going to be interesting to monitor this situation over the weekend and potentially into next week to see if Zadorov and the Canucks are able to agree to terms on a new contract that'll keep him in Vancouver for years to come.
