It's confirmed for Ilya Mikeheyev: The Canucks have to pay
Vancouver Canucks forward Ilya Mikheyev has emerged as one of the NHL's top trade targets as the team looks to create more flexibility under the salary cap.
Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli lists Mikheyev as number 6 on the top ten trade targets board, saying the Canucks desire to keep some of their own top free agents will require more flexibility under the salary cap.
After a tough playoff, Mikheyev's contract is gumming up the works on Vancouver's offseason. They can't more aggressively pursue multiple pending free agents (Nikita Zadorov, Elias Lindholm, Filip Hronek) until they can get clearer view of their cap picture. Seravalli says the team has been trying to move the speedy winger since they were eliminated, and also offered him up in trade talks near the trade deadline.
The problem is, the desire to add a winger making nearly $5 million for the next two seasons who scored just one goal in his final 61 games played is not exactly high throughout the league - Seravalli says many teams want an asset attached to take him.
While the Canucks aren't keen on that idea, they'll have to find a way to open up more than the $26.5 million in cap space if they want to hang on to some of their top free agents and improve the roster
