Some Vancouver Canucks fans go after the organization after the announcement Roberto Luongo was nominated to the NHL quarter-century team, bringing more attention to the fact that his number still has not been retired by the organization.
After what was a record setting season for the Canucks in 2023-2024, the expectations coming into this year were sky high, where most media outlets, analysts and fans expected them to make a serious run for the Stanley Cup.
Unfortunately, the complete opposite outcome happened by not even making the Stanley Cup.
Fans not happy with the Vancouver Canucks
The National Hockey League revealed the final 6 names that were going to be added to their Quarter-Century Team and as expected, Roberto Luongo was voted to the team.
"For me, he was the difference for us to get to the next level. If you talk about a winner, he is the guy. The way he competed in practice and in games, but mostly in practice. He never took a day off and that's something that I think a lot of players learned from. ... He just wanted to get better each and every day." Henrik Sedin said about Roberto Luongo.
Along with Luongo, Henrik Lundqvist,
Carey Price, Patrick Roy,
Marc-Andre Fleury and Martin Brodeur were all nominated to the team as the best netminders from the last 25 years.
The Vancouver Canucks made a social media post honoring and congratulating Luongo, but fans quickly began calling the organization out for still not retiring his number.
Over 7 seasons, Luongo played 448 games, securing a win/loss record of 252/137 and achieving an incredible .919 save percentage and 2.36 goals against average.
Along with serving as the only goalie to be captain in decades, he was inducted as a first ballot Hall-of-Famer in 2022.
The fact he led these teams from the crease and is one of the most dominating goalies in NHL history, it is pretty crazy that the Vancouver Canucks have not retired his jersey number, and this nomination for the quarter-century team has only brought more attention to that fact, and fans are letting them have it.
Even more embarrassing now that they didn't retire his number.
Pathetic organization.
With all that, fans have a justified gripe with the organization for thinking they are disrespecting him.
