Former professional hockey player from British Columbia passes away
In a press release on Wednesday afternoon, the ECHL announced that one of their former players, Wade MacLeod, has passed away at the age of 38 following a battle with brain cancer.
"The ECHL and its member teams mourn the loss and express their condolences to the family and friends of former ECHL player Wade MacLeod, who passed away following a long battle with brain cancer at the age of 38." the ECHL said.
MacLeod, a native of Coquitlam, British Columbia, spent two seasons in the BCHL with the Merritt Centennials before making the jump to the NCAA with Northeastern University, where he'd play a total of four years, the last of which he wore an 'A' on his sweater while leading his school in points.
After his time at Northeastern came to a close, MacLeod immediately made the jump to professional hockey, playing with the AHL's Springfield Falcons (now Thunderbirds) for parts of three seasons and the club released a statement on their social media after news came out about his passing.
"The Springfield Thunderbirds join the community in mourning the loss of former Springfield Falcons forward Wade MacLeod. MacLeod played for the Falcons from 2011 to 2013.
Our hearts go out to all those who loved Wade, especially his wife and two daughters." the Thunderbirds said.
MacLeod would also go on to suit up for the Evansville Icemen (ECHL), Toronto Marlies (AHL), Orlando Solar Bears (ECHL), Idaho Steelheads (ECHL), Starbulls Rosenheim (DEL2), Allen Americans (ECHL), Lowen Frankfurt (DEL2), Manchester Storm (EIHL), Narvik Hockey (Norway2) and Lillehammer (Norway) before hanging up the skates following the 2021-22 season.
The thoughts of everyone here at Canucks Daily are with the family, friends and former teammates of Wade MacLeod at this difficult time.
