A former Stanley Cup champion has been mentioned as a potential Assistant Coaching candidate for the Vancouver Canucks on Adam Foote's staff next season.
The Vancouver Canucks
announced last week that they promoted Adam Foote to the role of Head Coach after parts of three seasons as an assistant on the staff of Rick Tocchet, who departed the club last month to
join the Philadelphia Flyers.
With Adam Foote shifting to Head Coach starting next season, the Vancouver Canucks are searching to make a couple of additions to the coaching staff in the coming weeks and
some potential candidates have already been revealed including one of their former bench bosses, Marc Crawford.
Former Stanley Cup champion among options for Vancouver Canucks' Assistant Coach vacancies
Foote and General Manager Patrik Allvin confirmed with reporters that they intend on adding two coaches this summer, one to focus on the offense and one on the defensive side of things, with Yogi Svejkovsky the only assistant listed
on the team's website as of Tuesday.
"Patrick Allvin and Adam Foote say they expect to add two coaches to the #Canucks staff. Foote says he would like a defensive and an offensive coach." Brendan Batchelor of Sportsnet 650 said."
As Jeff Paterson of Canucks Army
mentioned in a mailbag on Monday, it would make sense if the team looked to add someone to Adam Foote's staff with NHL Head Coaching experience to help out the rookie bench boss.
In an article on Last Word on Sports on Monday, Izzy Cheung took a look at some potential candidates that the Vancouver Canucks could consider in their search.
Although Cheung doesn't mention him directly as a candidate for one of the vacancies on the Canucks' bench, former Stanley Cup champion Claude Julien is brought up as an example of a long-time Head Coach shifting to an assistant role, which he currently occupies with the St. Louis Blues.
Julien, who has 18 seasons of Head Coaching experience in the National Hockey League, would be an excellent options behind the bench in Vancouver, if he were willing to leave the St. Louis Blues this summer after just one campaign as an assistant with them.
The Blind River, Ontario native could mentor Adam Foote throughout his first season as an NHL Head Coach and with Julien having a Stanley Cup and Jack Adams Award under his belt, it would certainly be an intriguing option for the Vancouver Canucks to consider.
