A former Vancouver Canucks defenseman has reportedly suffered an injury setback overseas which will require another surgery and will be out for quite some time.
The 2025-26 season is right around the corner, with some leagues overseas set to drop the puck within the next two to three weeks, including the Swedish Hockey League, which will be home to some former Vancouver Canucks, including goaltender Collin Delia,
who signed with Brynas IF back in early July.
Players across Europe are already back on the ice, participating in training camp and preseason games and looking forward to the upcoming season, but for one former Vancouver Canucks defenseman, it looks like his year might be over already.
Former Vancouver Canucks defenseman to have second surgery, season in doubt
In an interview with HockeyNews.se earlier this week, former Vancouver Canucks forward Oscar Fantenberg, who hurt a ligament in his hand last fall, revealed that he started having problems with the same issue again this summer while training and will need to undergo a second surgery.
Fantenberg said that he will be meeting with a specialist in Gothenburg next week and following the surgery, he will be in a cast for three weeks, a splint for three months and then he can start a rehab training regiment with the hopes of potentially returning to action in six months.
The former Canucks blueliner believes he can play another couple years of professional hockey, but admitted that it's been tough, adding that it's affected him at home, not being able to pick up his children or play with them.
Note: the following is translated from Swedish
"Of course it's tough. I've been playing hockey professionally since I was 17 and at a high level. I feel like I have a couple more years in me if I stay healthy. So of course it was tough." Fantenberg said.
He added, "At the same time, I've come to the conclusion that it doesn't work socially. You can barely pick up your children at home and play with them in a normal way."
The Ljungby, Sweden native spent one season with the Vancouver Canucks after signing with the club as an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2019.
In 36 regular season games, Fantenberg registered six points (one goal, five assists), six penalty minutes and was a minus-ten, while also going on to suit up for 16 games in the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Everyone here at Canucks Daily hopes that Oscar Fantenberg's surgery goes well and that he's able to return to the ice in Sweden at some point later in the 2025-26 season.
