On Friday, insider Rick Dhaliwal gave a massive update regarding Noah Juulsen's future with the Vancouver Canucks organization as he's set to become a UFA on July 1st.
With the opening of free agency a little over two weeks away, the Vancouver Canucks are still weighing their options with their top pending UFAs
including Pius Suter and
Brock Boeser.
Aside from those two, who understandably will get all the headlines in Vancouver, the team has a handful of other UFAs to keep an eye on leading up to Canada Day, one of them being defenseman Noah Juulsen, who had
season-ending hernia surgery back in February.
Vancouver Canucks reportedly deny Noah Juulsen's request to speak with other teams
Due to his injury and being made a healthy scratch on numerous occasions throughout the 2024-25 season, Noah Juulsen was limited to just 35 games with the Canucks, while averaging 16:17 of ice time per night - his highest since arriving in Vancouver.
With the logjam the Vancouver Canucks have on the blue line right now thanks to the emergence of
Elias Pettersson and Victor Mancini, along with the club
re-signing Derek Forbort, there doesn't appear to be any room on the NHL roster next season for Noah Juulsen and him leaving the organization on July 1st would make sense.
According to Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie & Dhali, Noah Juulsen approached the Vancouver Canucks recently to ask permission to speak with other teams around the league ahead of July 1st and the blueliner's request was denied.
Dhaliwal said that the reason is that the Canucks might need Noah Juulsen next season, especially if they move a defenseman out to land forward help this summer, so Patrik Allvin isn't closing the door just yet on re-signing the former first round pick.
"The reason it was denied is because the Canucks may or may not need Juulsen. It depends on if they trade a right-shot defenceman for top-six [forward] help. If the Canucks move a [Victor] Mancini or a [Tom] Willander for a second-line center, the Canucks may have to re-sign Juulsen to be that six-seven guy." Dhaliwal said while making an appearance on Halford and Brough on Sportsnet 650 radio.
Juulsen, a native of Surrey, British Columbia, joined the Vancouver Canucks organization through
a trade with the Florida Panthers in October 2021, spending the majority of his first two seasons with AHL Abbotsford.
In 109 games as a member of the Vancouver Canucks, Juulsen has nine points (one goal, eight assists), 49 penalty minutes and is a minus-16.
Despite the Canucks essentially using Noah Juulsen as a backup plan if they are to trade a defenseman this summer, it seems pretty unlikely that he'll return to Vancouver next season and he'll join another team where he's guaranteed to be in the lineup, albeit in a third pairing role, each game.
