LATEST | Another update on three-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Kessel and potential signing with the Canucks
It's been exactly two weeks since the Vancouver Canucks announced that unrestricted free agent forward and three-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Kessel would be joining up with AHL Abbotsford to work out and get up to game speed with the intention of a contract being signed at some point before March 8th.
There hasn't been a whole lot of news recently regarding Phil Kessel working out with the AHL's Abbotsford Canucks and on Tuesday's edition of 'Donnie and Dhali', Rick Dhaliwal provided an update.
Dhaliwal said that both sides want this to end in a signing and for Phil Kessel to be playing for the Vancouver Canucks.
"Kessel arrived in Vancouver two weeks ago today, he started working out for the Canucks the very next day. This past week, last week, he worked out again, it was with the Abbotsford Canucks yesterday. I am not hearing anything negative when it comes to the Canucks and Kessel. He will continue to work out this week." Dhaliwal said.
He added, "All sides want this to end with a signing, the goal was always to sign Kessel. I think that's where it's trending. He is not going to start in Abbotsford from what I'm told. It's going to be a sign with the Canucks first, if it happens, that's the way it's trending, and then possibly a conditioning assignment in Abbotsford after a signing."
If the Vancouver Canucks want to sign Phil Kessel, they'll have to do so within the next ten days. In order to be eligible for the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Kessel will need to put pen to paper with the Canucks, or any other team, by 3 p.m. ET on March 8th, so time is ticking.
It'll be interesting to see if the Canucks are able to work out a deal with Kessel in the coming days as he could bring some depth scoring to the team's bottom-six.
