Major Turn of Events as the Canucks Are No Longer Expected to Draft 15th Overall in 2025

A major shift is said to take place as NHL insider John Shannon believes that Patrik Allvin won't end up using the team's 2025 first round pick, with the club set to select 15th overall for the second time since 2022, where they took Jonathan Lekkerimaki.
We're exactly one month away from the start of the National Hockey League's 2025 Entry Draft and after trading their first round pick last year, the Vancouver Canucks will be will be selecting 15th overall, where the team could target a number of talents prospects including defenseman Kashawn Aitcheson of the Barrie Colts.
However, with the Vancouver Canucks having some holes to fill on their roster, including the second line center position, one NHL insider thinks that we won't end up seeing Patrik Allvin use the 15th overall pick next month.
NHL insider John Shannon believes Vancouver Canucks won't use first round pick
During an appearance on Sekeres and Price this week, NHL insider John Shannon discussed how he expects there to be more action around the Entry Draft this year rather than free agency as there isn't a deep UFA market in 2025.
"The free agent market is not that deep. Like the big names are not that deep. So, I suspect, even though it is a remote draft, we're probably going to see more around the draft than we are on July the 1st.
Now, there will be a frenzy of signings on July the 1st whether it's Mitch Marner or Nikolaj Ehlers or Brad [Marchand] or Sam Bennett. But I think there will be more around the draft, Blake. Just because there's another asset you can play with and you can try to deal with futures." Shannon said.

When it comes to the Vancouver Canucks, Shannon believes that Patrik Allvin won't be using his 15th overall pick in the first round and that it'll be traded to acquire a player that can help them next season.
"The Canucks, I think are at #15. Like, I don't expect the Canucks to draft. My own personal opinion. I do not expect the Canucks to draft.
I think that they're going to trade the pick to get somebody that can help them next year. Because that's what they need and I see that more happening around the draft than I do in free agency." Shannon said.

If the Vancouver Canucks do decide they're going to trade that first round pick for help next season, whether that be a second line centerman or a top-six winger to replace Brock Boeser, who is expected to leave in free agency, Patrik Allvin will have a number of players he could target.
Among the options Allvin could consider this summer include John-Jason Peterka of the Buffalo Sabres, Pavel Zacha of the Boston Bruins and Chris Kreider of the New York Rangers.
