The Vancouver Canucks are entering a bit of an uncertain period when it comes to the future of their captain Quinn Hughes, who has two years remaining on his contract and can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, 2027.
During his season-ending media availability, President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford
revealed there is a chance they could lose Quinn Hughes in the years ahead and it may not boil down to money or term or anything contract-wise as he has expressed a desire to play with his brothers Jack and Luke at some point in his NHL career.
Elliotte Friedman gives update on Quinn Hughes' future with the Vancouver Canucks
It doesn't seem like the Vancouver Canucks want to move on from Quinn Hughes anytime soon and obviously, their priority would be to sign him to a long-term extension next summer, but that might be out of their control.
While the Vancouver Canucks believe they're making the right moves to ensure that Quinn Hughes is happy and will want to stay with them long-term, it looks like the team might be on the clock when it comes to their captain, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
During an interview on Sportsnet 590 radio, Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Vancouver Canucks are on the clock with Quinn Hughes and he believes at some point, the captain might say to the management group that he doesn't want to play somewhere that he doesn't have a chance of winning a Stanley Cup.
"Elliotte Friedman: Canucks are "absolutely" on the clock when it comes to Quinn Hughes; Hughes is going to start saying "I don't want to be somewhere where I'm not gonna win" at some point - SN 590" NHL Rumour Report said on X.
Losing Quinn Hughes would be devastating for the Vancouver Canucks organization as he's undoubtedly the best defenseman the franchise has ever seen and a top-ten player in team history.
Hughes consistently produces offensively for the Canucks, with 75+ points in each of the last three seasons and had gotten a lot better on the defensive side of the puck since arriving in Vancouver at the tail end of the 2018-19 season.
Rumors are going to continue to run rampant regarding the Vancouver Canucks captain over the next 12+ months and will certainly heat up even further closer to July 1st, 2026 - the date he becomes eligible to put pen-to-paper on an extension.
