A former NHL recently shared what needs to go right for the Vancouver Canucks to be able to keep their captain Quinn Hughes around beyond the 2026-27 season.

Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes has two years remaining on his contract with the team and with rumors flying all summer long about potentially uniting with his brothers Jack & Luke in New Jersey when he becomes a free agent, the 25-year-old said his focus is on this season and this season only right now, wanting to help the club make it back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
"One thing I'm really good at - or have gotten good at - is I'm very present. I can't even sign for another year, so there's nothing I can do. As far as the noise (about his future), I can handle the noise. That's why I'm the captain of the team, because I can handle these things and I can play at an elite level and it doesn't matter what's going on around me." Hughes said.

He added, "And as far as the noise around my teammates, I'm going to try to help everyone else, too, and be as good a leader as I can be. Noise doesn't bother me. It's a long year, and I'm just going to be day-to-day and focus on the short term. That's the truth, honestly."

There's no question that next summer, the Vancouver Canucks' priority will be to lock up Quinn Hughes to a long-term contract extension, but a lot needs to go right in order for that to become a reality and a former NHLer recently gave his opinion on what it'll take for the captain to put pen-to-paper on a new deal on Canada Day 2026.

Former NHLer shares what needs to go right in order for Quinn Hughes to sign contract extension

While his time might have been short with the Canucks, appearing in just 28 games across parts of three seasons, former defenseman Frank Corrado knows all about the noise and pressure that comes with playing in Vancouver.
The Canucks will turn to their captain to guide them back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs and even though he said recently that he can deal with the noise, there's no question that he's going to feel the pressure this season, compound that with the fact he's less than 10 months from being eligible to sign a contract extension and it could end up being the toughest year of his NHL career, but everyone believes he'll persevere.
During a recent edition of Sekeres & Price, Corrado detailed a few things that need to happen in order for Quinn Hughes to consider remaining in Vancouver on a long-term basis.
"I kind of pick three things that I think need to go right this year for it to have a chance of Quinn Hughes sticking around.

The first thing is Adam Foote needs to have the team playing like detailed, you know, playoff caliber hockey and that includes them getting offense and scoring goals.

Number two, pretty obvious, Elias Pettersson has to play like a number one centre, worth the value of contract. Doesn't have to be a 100-point player right away, but point-per-game type guy and your franchise goalie in [Thatcher] Demko has to be in the net and be available and look like he will be available for the long term because when he is, he's one of the best goalies in the NHL.

Unfortunately though, and you guys can tell me if you think different, I think if all those three things go exactly according to plan, it's still not like even 95%, 90% that Quinn Hughes is going to be a Canuck for a long time after the contract." Corrado said.
The Canucks' management likely have the whole Quinn Hughes situation in the back of their mind, especially with him being able to sign a new contract in less than a year, but the team needs to put that in the back pocket for now, focus on the task at hand - returning to the Stanley Cup Playoffs and worry about an extension when the time comes.
