A former Vancouver Canucks prospect has been placed on unconditional waivers on Tuesday morning as his current club is set to terminate his NHL contract.

Teams around the National Hockey League are continuing to to build their rosters for the 2025-26 season, which is 84 days away, and part of that always includes taking a look at their prospect pool and seeing if there is anyone they think can plug a hole to start the year.
For the Calgary Flames, who have missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of the last three season, they have a pretty solid prospect pool headlined by Zayne Parekh, and in January 2024, they added a couple in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks, which saw Patrik Allvin acquire Elias Lindholm.
Nearly 18 months later and it looks like that one of those former Vancouver Canucks prospects will officially see his time with the Calgary Flames organization come to an end.

Former Vancouver Canucks forward placed on unconditional waivers

In a post on X on Tuesday morning, Sportsnet hockey insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Calgary Flames have placed former Vancouver Canucks prospect Joni Jumo on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination and is joined by Ty Voit, a prospect in the Toronto Maple Leafs system.
"Joni Jurmo (CAL) & Ty Voit (TOR) both on unconditional waivers to terminate contracts" Friedman said.
As mentioned, Jurmo was acquired by the Calgary Wranglers in late-January 2024 along with a first round pick, a conditional fourth round pick, prospect Hunter Brzustewicz and forward Andrei Kuzmenko.
Less than two months after being acquired by the Flames, Calgary signed him to a two-year, entry-level contract that came with an average annual value (AAV) of $850,000 US.
The Espoo, Finland native split his first season in North America between the Calgary Wranglers of the American Hockey League and the ECHL's Rapid City Rush, registering ten points (two goals, eight assists) in 12 games with the latter.
Calgary's decision to place Joni Jurmo on unconditional waivers to terminate his contract likely signals that the blueliner has an opportunity to head back overseas to Europe, most likely in his home nation of Finland, so we'll have to wait and see what develops on that front after tomorrow.
