Former Stanley Cup champion and Olympic gold medalist Adam Foote has made his first comments after being named the 22nd Head Coach in Vancouver Canucks franchise history.

Following a two week search for their next Head Coach, where they took a look at all possibilities from those with plenty of experience and those who have yet to be a bench boss at the NHL level, the Vancouver Canucks found their guy.
On Wednesday, the club the team announced that Assistant Coach Adam Foote, who has been with the team since January 2023, will be their new Head Coach, replacing Rick Tocchet.

Adam Foote speaks for the first time since being named Head Coach

One day after being named Head Coach, Adam Foote sat down with Chris Faber on the Canucks Insider Podcast to discuss his new role with the organization.
Foote realized after parts of three seasons behind the bench as an assistant with the Canucks that he wanted to become a Head Coach in the National Hockey League and that he likes being around the group they have in Vancouver.
The long-time NHL defenseman wants to win, he knows the group wants to win and he's going to do whatever it takes to turn this team into a Stanley Cup contender.
"I like being around the guys. When you get an opportunity to play in the NHL for a long time and play with great players, get a chance to win, and then it's over. You just can't do it anymore. Your body won't do it, and you've got to hang them up. There's an empty feeling for a long time." Foote said.

He added, "You try to get back in the game at different levels. And you know, you go part-time, and part-time is not always right, because you're not all-in going to war with the guys, and it just doesn't feel right. Since I took this job and Rick gave me that opportunity, the organization gave me that opportunity, I felt alive again. I mean, there are times you just want to jump over the boards and play when you sit on the bench, but you can't."

When the Vancouver Canucks made the news official on Wednesday, fans weren't too happy with the decision and while obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion, it's not very fair to say Adam Foote isn't the right choice before he's even stepped behind the bench in his new role.
Adam Foote and the Canucks are hoping that this season was a fluke and that they'll return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2026, with potentially some additions to the roster this summer by General Manager Patrik Allvin.
