A trade proposal has emerged this week that would send Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes to the New Jersey Devils where he'd reunite with brothers Jack & Luke.
For the better part of the last seven months, Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes has seen his named mentioned in trade rumors after the team's President of Hockey Operations, Jim Rutherford, spoke about his desire to eventually play with his brothers Jack and Luke of the New Jersey Devils at some point in his NHL career.
"It may not boil down to money with [Quinn]. He said before he wants to play with his brothers. That would be partly out of our control. In our control if we brought his brothers here." Rutherford said.
Hughes is eligible to sign a contract extension as of Canada Day, but with the direction the Vancouver Canucks are likely heading in, it's still unclear if he'll want to stick around long-term if he doesn't have a realistic chance of winning a Stanley Cup with the club.
"I believe Quinn and his agent are aware of the direction we want to go. And they're aware of the direction they want to go. Everybody wants to play on a winning team. But there's different reasons why people make decisions" Jim Rutherford said this week.
Trade proposal emerges sending Quinn Hughes to the New Jersey Devils
Following the news this week that the Vancouver Canucks have made veteran players available, Nick Villano of Pucks & Pitchforks has shared a trade proposal that would send Quinn Hughes to the New Jersey Devils.
Villano's proposal would see Quinn Hughes head to The Garden State in exchange for 24-year-old forward Dawson Mercer, former second overall pick Simon Nemec and a first round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.
"Now, with Nemec going out of his mind and Mercer getting back to the opportunistic player who looks like a future 30-goal scorer, it makes a lot more sense. We don't think any other team can beat this proposal, as Nemec looks like he could grow into a top-10 defenseman if everything goes right. That's still a question, but he has an incredible skillset and he has already taken over games." Villano said.
That proposal is a good example of what the Vancouver Canucks would probably like in return for Quinn Hughes, if they were to trade him - a young forward who can play center, a young defenseman with top-four potential, as well as a first round pick.
Will something get done on this front leading up to March's trade deadline? It's hard to say, but there will certainly be interest and team's will need to blow Patrik Allvin away with an offer for him to even consider moving on from his captain and one of the greatest players in Vancouver Canucks history.
