Vancouver Canucks Finally Put Pen to Paper with Top Prospect Tom Willander
After several weeks of negotiations, the Vancouver Canucks have finally got a contract done with the their top prospect and 2023 first-round pick Tom Willander.
When Boston University's season came to a close, every Vancouver Canucks fan was awaiting news on Tom Willander and when he would sign his entry-level contract.
In late April, the two sides were reportedly
only separated by $200,000, before the top prospect returned to Sweden to appear in his nation's training camp ahead of the 2025 IIHF World Championship, with rumors swirling about a potential return to Boston University for a third year or potentially signing in Europe.
Vancouver Canucks officially sign top prospect Tom Willander
On Wednesday morning, less than an hour after
naming Adam Foote head coach, the Vancouver Canucks announced that they've agreed to terms on a three-year, entry-level contract beginning next season with Tom Willander.
"Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has agreed to terms with defenceman Tom Willander on a three-year, entry-level contract starting in 2025.26." the Canucks said on X.
Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin commented on the signing on Wednesday, saying that he's very excited to have Tom Willander under contract and have him start his professional career in the fall.
Allvin added that the team has been very impressed with him over his two years in the NCAA with Boston University and they believe now is the perfect time for him to make the jump to professional hockey.
"We are excited to have Tom under contract and for him to start his professional hockey career. Our group has watched him closely the past couple of seasons and have been impressed with his progression and growth in the NCAA. Now is the perfect time for him to take the next step and join our organization. The hard work starts this summer, and we look forward to seeing where Tom is at this September at training camp." Allvin said.
Willander, 20, was selected 11th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft after a strong season with Rogle BK's junior team in Sweden.
In 39 games this season for Boston University, the Stockholm native put up 24 points (two goals, 22 assists), eight penalty minutes and was a plus-19.
