A former first overall pick has been suggested as a possible trade target for the Vancouver Canucks as they continue their search for some help on forward.

With August only five days away, action is expected to heat up around the National Hockey League and the Vancouver Canucks are hoping to be in the thick of things, as they were throughout July.
A recent report stated that the Canucks aren't done adding to their roster just yet as they look for potentially another top-six forward who can make an impact next season as the club hopes to making a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
In recent weeks, the Canucks have been linked to a number of different players around the National Hockey League, both on the free agent and trade markets, and it looks like someone they've targeted in the past could be a potential option for the club.

Former first overall pick named as possible trade target for Vancouver Canucks

In a recent article for Daily Hive, Trevor Beggs examined several younger players that Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks could target this summer, if they're still wanting to add another forward to the fold.
Among the names mentioned by Beggs include 2020 first overall pick Alexis Lafreniere, who the Vancouver Canucks have been linked to on numerous occasions dating back to January of 2023.
Now, it's not guaranteed that the New York Rangers will move on from Alexis Lafreniere this summer or at all during the 2025-26 campaign, but the Saint-Eustache, Quebec native hasn't really lived up to the hype he had coming into the league as a first overall pick, registering 92 goals and 193 points in 380 games so far.
If Lafreniere has a slow start to the season in The Big Apple, his name will certainly be back in the rumor mill and it may be time to start to consider giving him a fresh start elsewhere and as Beggs mentioned, his former agent, Emilie Castonguay, is currently one of the Vancouver Canucks' Assistant General Managers.
"Long linked to the Canucks given that his former agent, Emilie Castonguay, is Vancouver's assistant GM, these rumours have quieted down following the Miller trade.

However, until Alexis Lafrenière discovers his potential, he's a name worth watching." Beggs said.

Two seasons ago, it looked like Lafreniere was finally taking that next step after putting up 28 goals in the regular season along with 14 points in 16 Stanley Cup Playoffs contests, however during the 2024-25 campaign, his production dipped a bit.
In 82, the 23-year-old winger had 45 points (17 goals, 28 assists), 38 penalty minutes and was a minus-13 and hopefully, with a new coach behind the bench in New York, he'll be able to hit his potential or else he could be finding himself on a new team, potentially Vancouver, before the deadline in early March.
