An insider said recently that he believes Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes has earned the right to consider leaving the organization as a free agent.
Training camp is in full swing, the 2025-26 season is set to get underway in two weeks and still, a lot of the talk coming out of Vancouver, for good reason to be fair, is the future of Canucks captain Quinn Hughes.
"One thing I'm really good at - or have gotten good at - is I'm very present. I can't even sign for another year, so there's nothing I can do. As far as the noise (about his future), I can handle the noise. That's why I'm the captain of the team, because I can handle these things and I can play at an elite level and it doesn't matter what's going on around me." Hughes said.
Insider believes Quinn Hughes has earned the right to consider leaving the Vancouver Canucks
During an appearance on The Sheet with Jeff Marek on Monday, Blake Price of Sekeres and Price said that he believes Quinn Hughes is in a position right now where he is allowed to consider his options, one of which could be leaving the club as a free agent.
Price added, that if the Vancouver Canucks aren't able to prove to Quinn Hughes that they can be a contender in both the short and long-term, then it wouldn't be a surprise to see him eventually leave.
"How many years can a player be expected to give to the team that drafted, developed, and paid him before the player is quote-unquote allowed to say, 'I need to do something for me now'? It feels like Quinn Hughes is at that spot." Price said.
He added, "And if the Vancouver Canucks aren't going to be at that spot where he is in his career at his age, he's going to go somewhere else. And I don't think close is enough. Close is a miss."
Thankfully for Canucks fans who have been worrying about their captain potentially leaving in less than 24 months, General Manager Patrik Allvin has done a good job to construct a roster which, if everyone stays healthy, can absolutely contend for a Stanley Cup Playoff spot later on in the season.
Quinn Hughes is going to do everything in his power to get the Vancouver Canucks to that point as well after the team's disappointing 2024-25 season, as he looks for his fourth straight campaign with 75 or more points.
