The Vancouver Canucks have all but lost any little center depth they have had, due to several injuries they desperately need some help, and Alex Wennberg of the San Jose Sharks could be that help.
Alex Wennberg has good experience being a 2nd, 3rd line center and won't be too expensive to acquire.
"General Manager Patrik Allvin has reportedly been working the phone lines, even before the team's injury issues, to get some forward help for his group, potentially in their middle-six to replace Nils Hoglander, who is out of action until later on in December."-Jaxon
Alex Wennberg becomes new trade target for the Canucks.
Adam Kierszenblat of the Hockey News writes about the support Alex Wennberg could provide the Vancouver Canucks. While he isn't the biggest name by a long shot in the NHL, he's a depth piece they desperately need, and will not be too expensive.
"The question is, would Wennberg fit into Vancouver's lineup? Without going into too much detail, the simple answer is yes. He can win faceoffs at a decent rate (47.5 this year), play on the second power play, and be a consistent playmaker in the middle-six. Overall, Wennberg checks off a lot of boxes, which is why the fit makes sense."- Kierszenblat
However can Wennberg be a true 2nd line center? When he started his career in Columbus the answer was an obvious yes, but he has not been as good in recent years.
"Last, and maybe most important, is cost. At the moment, there is a reluctance around the league to part with first-round picks due to what is considered a very strong 2026 NHL Draft class. With multiple teams needing a second-line center, the Canucks need to be careful not to get into a bidding war, as it could mean sacrificing key picks and prospects in the future."-Kierszenblat
The Canucks over the summer did not acquire a 2nd line center, as they claimed they were all too expensive, but now it definitely hasn't paid off, so either they accept they will not be a competitive team this year and play with what they have, or they overspend on players like Wennberg to try and make the playoffs. it's not the best situation right now in Vancouver.
