Vancouver Canucks Refusing to Budge on One Core Piece Amid Trade Talks Heating Up
A National Hockey League insider revealed recently that there is one specific asset that Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin doesn't want to part with.
"The Vancouver Canucks are believed to be looking for a middle-six forward to add to their roster due to winger Nils Hoglander missing the next eight-to-ten weeks because of an injury. Canucks GM Patrik Allvin has been exploring options, according to separate league sources, but it is unclear if a move is imminent." David Pagnotta reported recently.
NHL insider reveals one asset that the Vancouver Canucks don't want to part with
During a recent edition of his 32 Thoughts article on Sportsnet, National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that while the Vancouver Canucks are hoping to land a centerman, Patrik Allvin doesn't want to move on from the team's first round pick in the 2026 Entry Draft in any deal this season.
"In their search for a centre, the Canucks have made it clear they don't want to move their 2026 first. So far, they've held to that and we'll see where things go." Friedman said.
The decision to not want to part with their first round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft is both surprising and not surprising at the same time and here's why.
Starting off with the "surprising" point of view. With the Vancouver Canucks uncertain about the future of
Quinn Hughes, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2027, you'd think they would go all-in and have no untouchables as they look to win a Stanley Cup with their star defenseman still a part of the organization.
As for the "not surprising" aspect, it comes down to who is available at the top of this year's draft class and potentially a generational player - Gavin McKenna, the 17-year-old from Whitehorse, Yukon who had 129 points with the Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL) last season and six points in six games with Penn State (NCAA) this year.
We'll have to wait and see what Patrik Allvin decides to do with his first round pick later on in the season, but if the Canucks are in a position to add a big name player to their roster, someone that'll help them compete while Quinn Hughes is still around, he absolutely should consider moving on from that selection.
