The Vancouver Canucks have reportedly inquired with the San Jose Sharks regarding an ex-first round pick who would give them a massive boost down the middle.

As the Vancouver Canucks continue to navigate their difficult injury situation, the club is getting to a point where acquire external help will become necessary and hopefully sooner rather than later.
In recent weeks, the club has been linked to several centermen via trade including Nazem Kadri of the Calgary Flames and Jean-Gabriel Pageau of the New York Islanders.
Vancouver's search will certainly go beyond those two names and according to NHL insider David Pagnotta, General Manager Patrik Allvin has reached out to the San Jose Sharks to help address his club's need for a centerman.

Vancouver Canucks reportedly speak with San Jose Sharks regarding ex-first round pick

In an article for The Fourth Period recently, NHL insider David Pagnotta revealed that the Vancouver Canucks have inquired with the San Jose Sharks on the availability of former first round pick Alexander Wennberg.
"According to various reports, the Canucks have inquired on the availability of San Jose Sharks centre Alex Wennberg, who is in the final year of his contract and comes with a $5 million cap hit.

While a move is not yet believed to be imminent, Canucks GM Patrik Allvin is scouring the market for help at the dot and Wennberg is considered at option, though he is not the only player the Canucks are believed to have checked in on." The Fourth Period's article said.

Wennberg, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, is having a slow start to the 2025-26 season, registering just three points (one goal, two assists) in seven games and with the Sharks not expected to contend for a playoff spot, along with the fact that the centerman is a pending free agent, all signs point to him being moved at some point before the deadline on Friday, March 6th.
The 31-year-old would be a great addition to Adam Foote's group as he can bring some secondary scoring, doesn't take a ton of penalty minutes and can give them at least a 46-47% success rate in the faceoff dot.
With Wennberg carrying a $5 million US salary this season, the Canucks may need the San Jose Sharks to retain some money in any trade between the two clubs, which would drive up the price slightly, but with Vancouver desperate to add a centerman, they may have no choice but to pay more than they're wanting to.
