The Vancouver Canucks were once believed to have a strong young core in Quinn Hughes, Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson and Thatcher Demko, but it clearly hasn't worked out as planned, yet ownership is still in denial of having a rebuild.
"The Canucks have made it know that they will not enter a full-on rebuild, at least not right now, but big changes are certainly on the horizon in Vancouver as the future of Quinn Hughes needs to be addressed in the first half of 2026."-Jaxon
Vancouver Canucks ownership stubborn with rebuild.
Deepanjan Mitra of Breakaway SI reported on the reluctance of the Canucks organization to undergo a full rebuild. Because it takes time, and patience, but the current method isn't working, it provides a little hope for a season or two, then it's right back to square one.
Rather than focusing on accumulating a lot of high draft picks and developing them over a 5 year span, they try to retool, and it hasn't worked for them.
"The impact of that refusal has shaped every decision the organization has made since the end of the Sedin era, and it explains why Vancouver keeps spinning its wheels without ever committing to a clear direction."-Mitra
The Canucks had opportunities for a rebuild in 2014 and 2017, they desperately needed one and it was rejected.
They had the potential to follow the Chicago Blackhawks model, after losing their core players, they took their time, acquired draft picks and young talent.
Now while they aren't ready to compete for a Stanley Cup, they are starting to show how good of a team they will be in a few years with Connor Bedard leading the way.
"Instead, they preferred Jim Benning's plan to accelerate out of the team's struggles. In 2017, ownership again chose Benning's approach over Trevor Linden's more patient Chicago model, which would have emphasized draft picks and development."-Mitra
There is no way around it, the Canucks need a rebuild, and with next year's draft class being so strong, it's the right time to make that decision. The Canucks can acquire a lot of draft picks with some of the players they have right now. It's the only reasonable way to improve in the future.
