An NHL insider has given a big update regarding trade rumors involving Vancouver Canucks forward Jake DeBrusk and the odds he's moved before the March 6th deadline.
With just 40 days to go until the National Hockey League's trade deadline for the 2025-26 season, the Vancouver Canucks have some tough decisions to make with their big name players, especially when factoring in their plans to rebuild.
Among the names that have been thrown around lately include Elias Pettersson, Conor Garland, Evander Kane, Drew O'Connor, as well as forward Jake DeBrusk, who entered the rumor mill following a late-December scratch.
"I think Vancouver would like to move Jake Debrusk, he does have trade protection, but it's maybe not as cut and dried as some would think." TSN's Darren Dreger said on Sekeres and Price earlier this month.
NHL insider shares big update regarding trade rumors involving Jake DeBrusk
On Thursday's edition of The Chris Johnston Show, the NHL insider shared his thoughts on Jake DeBrusk's situation in Vancouver and whether or not a trade could materialize before the deadline in early March.
According to Johnston, the Vancouver Canucks and Jake DeBrusk's camp haven't had any discussions about the forward waiving his no-movement clause and while it's possible that could happen if the team is presented with an offer they really like, he's unsure if Patrik Allvin will actually move him prior to the deadline.
"Jake DeBrusk has a no-movement clause and doesn't sound like there's been any discussions in terms of having him waive; that could still happen between now and March 6th but I don't know how likely that is." Johnston said.
With the term and money owed to Jake DeBrusk, it wouldn't be easy for Patrik Allvin to trade him in-season, which is why if anything is to happen on this front, it's more likely than not to happen during the summer when teams have a better idea of their salary cap situation.
However, with Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos reporting that Jake DeBrusk's camp wasn't happy with the healthy scratch, perhaps we could see them push for a move and for the Edmonton, Alberta native to get a "fresh start" elsewhere.
"Jake DeBrusk was made a healthy scratch on Dec. 29 and word is that did not sit well with his camp and it made rival teams aware that there might be some issues here. When DeBrusk signed as a free agent with Vancouver in 2024 he had as many as 14 teams after him with four-to-six year contract offers and teams are making calls on him now. There's blood in the water and sharks are circling this team." Kypreos said in a recent article for Sportsnet.
In 50 games this season, his second with the Vancouver Canucks, Jake DeBrusk has 24 points (12 goals, 12 assists), four penalty minutes and is a minus-12.
