Insider reveals information on a legendary candidate the Canucks had interviewed prior to Tocchet
The press conference Jim Rutherford gave a week ago following the announcement of Tanner Pearson's injury, revealed a lot of information. Especially regarding the Canucks' coaching change that was about to come.
Rutherford revealed that he and Allvin had already been conducting interviews to find the proper replacement behind the bench. History has taught us that Rick Tocchet happened to be the elected man by Rutherford and Allvin.
Though recent affirmations from insiders around the team have suggested or rather informed us, that the team had previously met with the legendary Mike Babcock.
Mike Babcock is definitely a big name still out there, he's mainly known for his long tenure with the Detroit Red Wings where not only were they dominant, but they won the highest honors in 2008 and lost in the finals the following year.
He then took over the bench in Toronto with the likes of Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner but was never able to repeat his previous exploits.
History doesn't tell us whether he chose not to take the job or if it was Rutherford's call not to hire him. Though one thing is certain, Tocchet will be the man to stand behind the bench for presumably this season and the following two years. Would Babcock have been a better candidate?
