Since the new management (Rutherford, Allvin) has been put in place in Vancouver, the Canucks' Head Coach Bruce Boudreau has been taking his fair share of heat. It was rumored more the once that Rutherford and Allvin were on the market for a new coach over the summer but it never materialized. Now, with the way the Canucks' season is going, it's only a matter of time before they make an official statement in regard to the coaching position.
The Canucks are in desperate need of a change whether it's on the ice or off the ice and it'll definitely happen before the 2023-2024 season kicks in. Boudreau was hired directly by the team owner Francesco Aquillini and is currently in the last year of his contract. Rutherford and Allvin have started making their moves in Vancouver and it seems normal that they'd want to choose their man on the bench.
Rutherford has previous history with Tocchet since he was Sullivan's assistant coach when they went on to win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017 before he took a head coaching job in Arizona. He was relieved of his duties in 2021 and has not seen NHL actions since then. The existing liaison between the two obviously makes him a prime candidate.
