Beloved Former ESPN Sports Science Host Tragically Passes Away at Just 54 Years Old

A former ESPN television show host, best known for his work on 'Sports Science', has sadly passed away at the age of 54, his network announced over the weekend.

2025 has been a tough year for not only hockey, but the sporting world as a whole as we've sadly lost a number of athletes, front office executives, broadcasters, television hosts and most importantly, some really great people.
Over the weekend, we sadly lost another member of the sporting community and someone fans of ESPN might be very familiar with from the late 2000s.

Former ESPN 'Sports Science' host John Brenkus passes away

On Sunday night, through his social media accounts, Brinx TV, Brenkus' television company that he founded and joined in 2013, released a statement regarding the former ESPN host's passing, on behalf of the family.
In the statement, Brinx TV sadly shared that John Brenkus was dealing with depression and lost his fight with the illness on Saturday.
"It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus had passed away.

John, co-founder of BASE Productions, founder of Brinx.TV and co-creator and host of the 6-time Emmy Award-winning Sport Science, had been battling depression.

John lost his fight with this terrible illness on May 31st, 2025.

His heartbroken family and friends request privacy at this time, and encourage anyone who is struggling with depression to seek help." the statement said.
As mentioned, Brenkus was best known for his work on 'Sports Science', a show he co-founded and hosted on FOX for two seasons before season three was picked up by ESPN.
The show explored the science and engineering behind sports and certain aspect of a sport and an athlete, such as reaction time for example and it was a big hit among those watching in the United States, even won three Emmys after being nominated for a total of nine for seasons 1 and 2.
Tributes have poured in from across the sporting world including from former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.

The man who gave us the Emmy Winning Sports Science lost his battle with depression at the age of 53." Robert Griffin III said on X.
