A Vancouver Canucks trade target has signed a contract extension with the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday morning, ending any hopes of him coming to British Columbia.
The Vancouver Canucks have a few areas they'd like to address this summer including the second line center position and potentially bringing in a top-six winger if
Brock Boeser ends up leaving on July 1st.
In recent weeks, Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford have been linked to a number of players, with a couple of them, including
Marcus Johansson of the Minnesota Wild have re-signed with their current team and now another one of their targets has inked an extension in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia Flyers sign restricted free agent Noah Cates to contract extension
On Tuesday morning, the Philadelphia Flyers announced on social media that they've agreed to terms on a four-year contract worth $16 million USD ($4 million AAV) with restricted free agent forward Noah Cates.
"BREAKING: We have signed forward @cates_noah to a four-year contract extension worth an annual average value (AAV) of $4 million. #LetsGoFlyers" the team said on X.
With Noah Cates now under contract until the end of the 2028-29 NHL season, the Vancouver Canucks and other teams around the league are no longer able to issue him an offer sheet this summer, which some were wondering if if that would've come to fruition on Canada Day.
Cates, a native of Stillwater, Minnesota, appeared in 78 games this past season for the Philadelphia Flyers where he registered 37 points (16 goals - new career high, 21 assists), along with 14 penalty minutes and was a plus-three.
"Noah Cates, signed 4x$4M by PHI, is a middle six defensive forward. Plays a simple but effective game centred around forechecking and going to the net. No playmaking skill or style points but works hard and tilts the ice. #LetsGoFlyers" JFresh said on X.
Now that Noah Cates is out of the question for the Vancouver Canucks, Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford will have to shift their attention elsewhere on the trade market to address the needs the team has and one name to keep an eye on is
Marco Rossi of the Minnesota Wild, who they've been
linked to within the last week.
