A controversial former Vancouver Canucks forward has signed a new contract overseas and it doesn't look like he'll be returning to North America anytime soon.
As the offseason gets underway here in North America, with action around the National Hockey League is
expected to pick up in the weeks ahead, teams in Europe and Russia are also getting ready for a busy summer and beginning to prepare their rosters for the 2025-26 season.
In recent weeks, we've seen former Vancouver Canucks player sign contracts overseas,
including David Booth in Australia and on Tuesday, another ex-Canuck decided he's going to remain in Russia after putting pen-to-paper on a deal to join a new team.
Former Vancouver Canucks forward Reid Boucher signs new contract in KHL
On Tuesday, Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) club Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg announced that they've agreed to terms on a one-year contract with former Vancouver Canucks forward Reid Boucher after he spent the previous three seasons with Avangard Omsk.
Note: the following is translated from Russian
"Avtomobilist signed a contract with the Gagarin Cup winner, forward Reid Boucher. The agreement with the forward is for 1 season.
Boucher's agreement with Avtomobilist is valid until May 31, 2026. We welcome Reed to our team and wish him a bright and productive game!" the club said in a press release.
Boucher, 31, spent parts of four seasons with the Vancouver Canucks organization after being claimed off waivers from the
New Jersey Devils in January 2017.
In 48 NHL games with the Canucks, the Grand Ledge, Michigan native had 12 points (eight goals, four assists), six penalty minutes and was a minus-19.
The former fourth-round pick of the New Jersey Devils then headed to the KHL in Russia in 2020, where he's been ever since, winning a Gagarin Cup title with Avangard Omsk in his first year.
Two years later, in 2022,
he pleaded guilty to charges of third-degree criminal sexual conduct against a minor when Boucher was 17 and the victim was 12.
Boucher and the rest of Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg will be gearing up for training camp in mid-August before the 2025-26 KHL regular season begins in early September, with the official start date still to be determined.
