Arturs Silovs' Future with the Vancouver Canucks in Serious Doubt After Announcement
An NHL insider has given an update on the future of Latvian goaltender Arturs Silovs with the Vancouver Canucks, who have a bit of a crowded crease at the moment.
With the Vancouver Canucks
hoping to remain aggressive this summer, even after adding
Evander Kane through a trade with the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday, General Manager Patrik Allvin has a some areas that still need to be addressed, including their goaltending situation.
As of right now, the Vancouver Canucks have
Thatcher Demko and
Kevin Lankinen on their roster, with Arturs Silovs waiting in the wings for a full-time role in the NHL, which could come as early as next season, however, it might have to be with another team.
NHL insider gives update on Arturs Silovs' future with the Vancouver Canucks
Arturs Silovs is coming off an incredible run in the playoffs with the Abbotsford Canucks, leading them to
their first-ever Calder Cup, while winning the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as MVP.
In 24 Calder Cup Playoff games, the Riga native had a 16-7 record along with a 2.01 goals against average, a .931 save percentage and five shutouts.
Because of this strong play in the playoffs, it leaves
Patrik Allvin with a tough decision to make this summer, as the club likely doesn't want to head into the 2025-26 season with three goaltenders on their NHL roster, nor do they want to lose Arturs Silovs to the waiver wire.
Thatcher Demko, who is eligible to sign a contract extension as of next Tuesday,
has seen his name circulate in trade rumors recently and while moving him to create a roster spot for Arturs Silovs is still possible, one NHL insider believes that the Canucks could opt to move the latter instead.
According to Darren Dreger of TSN, he believes that it makes more sense that Arturs Silovs could be a trade chip for Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin this summer.
"It makes a lot of sense he could be in play" Dreger said according to NHL Rumour Report.
Silovs' value right now is probably a bit higher than that of Thatcher Demko and in turn, the Vancouver Canucks would stand a better chance at landing someone who could impact their roster, potentially a second line centerman, if they were to move the Latvian in a package with another asset rather than the former Vezina Trophy finalist.
The 24-year-old netminder has one year remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $850,000 US and is set to become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights on July 1st, 2026.
