Vancouver Canucks Now Know What It'll Cost to Keep Pius Suter, and It's Not Good
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman gave a big update on Wednesday morning regarding Vancouver Canucks forward Pius Suter and his future with the club, as well as what he could be looking at in free agency.
The National Hockey League's free agency window is set to open in less than a week, with the Vancouver Canucks having two notable names that are set to hit the market -
Brock Boeser and Pius Suter.
While Brock Boeser
is almost guaranteed to leave on July 1st, the Canucks' management group have been speaking with Pius Suter about a possible contract, but
reports suggest his number might be too high for the team to consider.
Elliotte Friedman gives big update on Pius Suter ahead of NHL free agency window opening
Earlier on Wednesday, the Vancouver Canucks
completed a trade with the Edmonton Oilers for
Evander Kane and took on his entire $5.125 million US salary for the 2025-26 season, which leaves very little wiggle room for Patrik Allvin to work with when it comes to not only re-signing the team's pending restricted free agents, but also from bringing in anyone else.
The trade for Evander Kane will also likely complicate things for Pius Suter's chances of remaining with the Vancouver Canucks and during an appearance on Sportsnet 590 radio, insider Elliotte Friedman gave an update on the Swiss forward heading into free agency.
According to Elliotte Friedman, Pius Suter believes he'll be able to get $4.5 million annually on the free agent market starting on Tuesday, which is a $2.9 million increase on what he earned per season with the Vancouver Canucks.
Additionally, Friedman said that he's heard the Vancouver Canucks aren't too comfortable with Pius Suter's salary demands, which leads one to believe the two sides are headed for a split on Canada Day.
"Elliotte Friedman: Pius Suter thinks he can get $4.5 per on the open market; I'm still not convinced Vancouver are comfortable with the number - SN 590" NHL Rumour Report said on X.
It's hard to blame Pius Suter for wanting to cash in, whether it be in Vancouver or on the free agent market, which appears to be quite slim when it comes to centermen.
The Zurich native is coming off his best season in the National Hockey League where he put up 46 points (25 goals, 21 assists) in 81 games and has absolutely earned a bump in pay this summer.
After acquiring Evander Kane, the Vancouver Canucks have $7.031 million available in cap space,
according to PuckPedia, so they may need to get creative in order to bring Pius Suter back, and have enough money to lock up all their RFAs, including Aaty Raty and
Arshdeep Bains.
