An insider has given a big update this week on what the next contract could look like for Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood, who is coming off a career year.

After an impressive 2024-25 campaign that saw him set a new NHL record for most hits in a single season, as well as putting up career highs in goals, assists and points.
Sherwood started this season with a bang on Thursday night, scoring the Vancouver Canucks' first goal of the 2025-26 campaign, giving them a 1-0 lead late in the first period.
"Thank you Kiefer Sherwood for the first Canucks goal of the season! 😮‍💨"

NHL insider gives big update on what Kiefer Sherwood's next contract could look like

On July 1st, Kiefer Sherwood became eligible to sign a contract extension with the Canucks and just a few days later, General Manager Patrik Allvin told reporters that the two sides have had preliminary discussions on a new deal.
"In a recent appearance on Sportsnet 650 (audio link), GM Patrik Allvin indicated that he has had preliminary discussions about a contract extension with Sherwood's camp." Pro Hockey Rumors said in July.

However as the summer went on, nothing appeared to intensify on the contract front, with Kiefer Sherwood even changing agents a couple of weeks before training camp.
Patrik Allvin commented on Sherwood's contract situation last month, telling reporters that there's no rush to get a deal done and that they're going to be patient.
"For Kiefer, it's the consistency. Learning to play with structure and playing a two-way game. We know his tenacity, speed, pace, physicality and shot were really good last year. We're excited to see him take another step this year." Allvin said.

He added, "We like Kiefer a lot and he fits in with the group, but there's no rush. We continue to talk. I have a fairly good relationship with most of the agents, so nothing is really going to change here."

In a recent article for Canucks Army, insider Irfaan Gaffar echoed what others have said in recent weeks, but did add that Sherwood's next contract will likely include double the salary he's currently making, going from $1.5 million US to $3 million, at minumum.
"There have been talks, but no negotiations between the Canucks and the Sherwood camp. Sherwood is in the final season of a deal that pays him $1.5 million dollars and he's due for a raise. It's going to be at least double what his current salary is, to start." Gaffar said.

He added, "For me, the most intriguing thing will be how long before the two sides really start to have open dialogue about an extension and where the Canucks are in the standings around the trade deadline. There are for sure a few teams that have Sherwood on their radar If in fact he becomes available."

If Sherwood happens to have another strong season like he did during the 2024-25 campaign, then the Vancouver Canucks may have no choice but to double his salary, or go even higher.
Aside from what Sherwood does on the ice, he appears to be well-liked in the dressing room by his teammates and while he only has 266 games of NHL experience under his belt, brings some leadership to this group as well, both of which the club would sorely miss if he ends up leaving next summer.
