The agent for Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes recently spoke about upcoming contract talks and doesn't believe Connor McDavid's new deal will be a factor.
The Vancouver Canucks returned to the ice on Thursday night as the hosted the Calgary Flames for their
first game of the 2025-26 season, with fans quite happy as Adam Foote's group pulled off an impressive 5-1 victory thanks to a multi-goal effort from Fliip Chytil.
To the surprise of some, captain Quinn Hughes didn't register a point but still looked solid as he led his time in ice time (25:07) and played a key role defensively in the win.
After comments made by Jim Rutherford in the spring, Quinn Hughes was the subject of trade rumors throughout the offseason, but
he told reporters that he can handle the noise, as the 25-year-old is less than nine months away from being eligible to sign a contract extension with the club.
"One thing I'm really good at - or have gotten good at - is I'm very present. I can't even sign for another year, so there's nothing I can do. As far as the noise (about his future), I can handle the noise. That's why I'm the captain of the team, because I can handle these things and I can play at an elite level and it doesn't matter what's going on around me." Hughes said.
Quinn Hughes' agent doesn't believe Connor McDavid's new deal will be a factor in contract talks
During a recent interview with The Province, agent Pat Brisson shared that he doesn't think Connor McDavid's new extension (two years x $12.5M AAV) will matter much in terms of other deals that'll be signed in the years to come, including for the Quinn Hughes, as the Oilers captain's contract is unique, given where he is in his career and what he's focused on.
"He's unique. It's his right to say, 'At age 28 almost 29, I want to do a two year deal. This is my pure decision, because I want to have it clear that the next few years, I did absolutely the best I could to try to win a cup'." Brisson said.
Brisson went on to talk about Quinn Hughes, saying that he hopes his client goes out there and has a great season for the Vancouver Canucks after the tough year they had in 2024-25.
He added that when the time is appropriate, they'll sit down and talk about a contract extension with the Canucks' brass, with a new deal unable to become official until Canada Day.
"He's doing great. He's having fun, smiling, feeling great. I told him to go and have a great season. Control what you control. And you know at the appropriate time we'll have more serious discussions. But right now, you help your team win," Brisson said.
He added, "Quinn can have more leverage or freedom, because he could be a potential UFA. But currently, we're not even talking about it. It's just talk about performing well. Continue to push yourself and make the team better. Make yourself better.'"
Hopefully, the Vancouver Canucks can have a strong season, make it back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs and show Quinn Hughes that they can be a competitive hockey club for years to come and if they do, perhaps he'll consider sticking around on a long-term basis.
