In 2023 the Vancouver Canucks made possibly their most controversial decision in recent memory, trading their captain Bo Horvat for Anthony Beauvilier, Aatu Raty and a first round pick.
"Cleary, Bo Horvat remains a bit bitter for how his tenure in Vancouver concluded, highlighting broken promises ending up in a trade, but he has embraced this new chapter in Long Island, expressing everything happens for a reason."-Mitchell
The Vancouver Canucks miss Bo Horvat right about now.
Ethan Van Dop of Canucks Army looked back on the trade the Canucks made sending Horvat to the New York Islanders. While it's been 2 years since the deal happened, it's still stings the Canucks, especially with how little depth they have up the middle.
"Horvat's current production has surpassed that of Miller's, and despite the Canucks recent acquisition of Marco Rossi, a player like Horvat would be the perfect addition to the teams centre depth. This season, with the Islanders, Horvat has 19 goals and 31 points, which would lead the Canucks in both categories. Not to mention, Horvat has been a big part of the Islanders' penalty kill, which ranks fifth in the entire NHL. The Canucks not only miss Horvat's offensive production, but also his penalty-killing ability, as the team is the third-worst penalty-killing team in the league."-Van Dop
The Canucks have no David Kampf as their second line center, with Elias Pettersson injured. If Horvat were still on the team and a healthy Pettersson, you'd have Horvat as the first line center, Pettersson on the second line, and Marco Rossi as the third line center. It would make all the difference to have him right now.
"Not only would Horvat help take some of the pressure off Pettersson, he would also be a key locker room presence for some of the Canucks' younger players, just like he was prior to his trade away from the Canucks. The team's current issues run deeper than just a lack of depth down the middle. So while still having Horvat would undoubtedly improve the on-ice product, it still likely wouldn't be enough to put the Canucks back into playoff contention."-Van Dop
The Canucks still would be a poor hockey team with Horvat. But his leadership would help out all the young talent they brought in. Horvat has a winning mentality and it's important to instil that early in young players. The Toronto Maple Leafs for example never developed that and it has hurt them since. The Canucks would be in a better place with Horvat around.
