Confirmed: Ilya Mikheyev has been traded to the Blackhawks, new detail emerges
The word had been circulating for a few hours, but the confirmation finally came. Ilya Mikheyev is headed to Chicago.
His agent, Dan Milstein, shared the news on his social media account:
Nobody comes to Chicago to get a tan. Ilya Mikheyev is #Blackhawks bound. #WeAreGoldStar!
The Canucks were on the market for cap space to get a proper top-six winger, and while shipping Mikheyev to Chicago came at a hefty cost, it gives the Canucks the space they need to be highly aggressive on the free agency market.
The total trade was announced, and some details were revealed. It was just revealed that the Canucks would be retaining 15% of Mikheyev's annual AAV:
Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announces that the #Canucks have acquired a 4th round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Ilya Mikheyev, Sam Lafferty, and a 2nd round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft. Vancouver is retaining 15% of Mikheyev's salary as a part of the transaction.
#Canucks are retaining 15% on Mikheyev. Out of that trade, the Canucks free up an additional $4.04M for the next two years on their salary cap. NHL teams are only allowed to retain salary on up to three contracts; the Canucks now have two spots left.
